Lovely Cup - Grouplove

Right off their soon-to-be released debut album, Never Trust A Happy Song, the follow-up to their successful self-titled EP released last year, Lovely Cup’s one of my favourite tracks from this relatively new band. It’s a great debut album, a nice blend of uptempo music with very strong indie influences.

I was first attracted to the bass riff, which always seems to give songs that rootsy feel, and I wasn’t disappointed by the entire feel of the song. The band sounds quite tight, and the vocal harmonies are absolutely beautiful, lead vocalist Christian Zucconi almost does it effortlessly, and the backing vocal tracks fill in the gaps perfectly. I love the shouts, slightly edgy without being too sharp, this song is almost anthemic in a way. The guitar instrumental reminds me of Two Door Cinema Club, and it’s a great track with very nice bass accents.

Say What Now of the Day: A Jewish York College professor came under fire recently for an anti-Semitic statement he made in class.
The hell you say? Listen up: A 22-year-old senior named Sarah Grunfeld complained to local Jewish groups that Professor Cameron Johnston had the audacity to exclaim “all Jews should be sterilized” in his “Self, Culture and Society” class.
Except that, had Grunfeld not tuned Johnston out before leaving the classroom in a huff, she might have heard him say “‘All Jews should be sterilized’…would be an example of an unacceptable and dangerous opinion.”
Luckily, Johnston managed to talk the Jewish community down from their calls to have him fired. The incident was “a very unfortunate misunderstanding,” said Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs rep. Sheldon Goodman.
Grunfeld, however, is not backing down from her claim that Johnston is an anti-Semitic Jew: “The words, ‘Jews should be sterilized’ still came out of his mouth,” she told the Toronto Star, “so regardless of the context I still think that’s pretty serious,” were words that came out of her mouth.”

How fitting that I’m reading about the reasons behind self-justification for Psychology and Law. Because people generally consider themselves to be at least reasonably intelligent, our minds come up with reasons for our failures that are external from our actions. This process is largely automatic and difficult to correct. The dissonant thoughts of “I am an intelligent, reasonable individual” and “I reported a professor to the local news because I completely ignored the latter half of his sentence” result in the easy self-justification of “I’m still reasonable and intelligent, and it is amoral for my professor to have even uttered those words in any context whatsoever.”

For some reason, “In God We Trust” didn’t really bother me, until just now….
Wow, now I’m really annoyed with how this gross generalization assumes all Americans* think and feel. But it also explains how most of them behave.
